History and location of Egilsstadir Airport
In the years 1951 to 1954 the first runway was built. Before that time flights to Egilsstadir were made by seaplane that landed on the lake Lagarfljót. The peninsula of Egilstadarnes was chosen as the location for the new runway and all the materials came from a gravel plain just east of the runway itself. With some minor maintenance over the years this runway served all flights until 1993.

Egilsstadir, new runway
The new tarmac runway was opened for use on the 23rd of September 1993. The location of the new runway is the same as the old one, on the east bank of of the Lagarfljót river between Egilsstadir and Fellabaer. The only change made was in the direction of the new runway which greatly improved the conditions for landing approach. Today the conditions for flights are very favourable. The soil of the old runway was changed and the surroundings have been cultivated. The new airport is surrounded by brushland, fields and meadows.
